Before and After Pictures of Campus Renovation

In 2008, we were presented the opportunity to lease an existing school building within the Mountain Island Lake community.  MID made many aesthetic improvements and needed functional improvements to the leased buildings with the intention of using the space as a stepping stone until newer facilities could be acquired.  We considered the possibilities of remaining in the leased site, but the annual maintenance was a tremendous expense.  If purchased the site would require a lot of capital to upgrade the facilities.  We remained in the leased site until a new property came onto the market in May of 2016.  The site was purchased and renovated for our use.  MID moved to the new site in August of 2016.

Families Commute

We looked at many aspects when investigating our site.  The first was how this move would impact our existing MID families' commute.  To our surprise, it was only 1-2 minutes further for families commuting from Huntersville, Denver, and Mountain Island Lake.  The new location reduces as much as 15 minutes off others commuting from Gastonia, Belmont, and Mount Holly.  The new site is conveniently located 3 miles off Hwy 16/Brookshire Blvd, just off Fred Alexander Blvd, and is only 1.5 miles off I-85 for families commuting from Gaston County.

Plans for the Area

After one drive on Fred Alexander Blvd, you can quickly see there is a larger plan for this beautiful new highway.  After some research, we discovered this highway was part of the “New West Side Development” plan.  Upon reading articles such as, “Could West Charlotte be the City’s New South End”? and “The Westside Strategic Plan” we quickly recognized this site was in an amazing location.  It would be a few minutes from the newly revealed River District, rumored to rival Ballantyne, and center of the area to be called the “Historic West End”.  Neighborhoods such as Westley Heights are now attracting the interest of area working professionals. As for Fred Alexander Hwy there are plans to extend it through Oakdale all the way to Harris Blvd.  The new site remained close to the school’s roots, the Mountain Island Lake community, but also opens the doors for families moving into these newly developing areas of Charlotte, Belmont, Mount Holly, and Gaston county.

Why make the switch from the original Coulwood location?

The short answer is... twice the land, twice the building, twice the amenities, and twice the future.  All of the classrooms are bigger than our old site, many are twice the size. The new site has beautiful features such as wooden beams, tongue and grove ceilings, rock accents, and a fireplace in area we will use as the school cafeteria.  It has numerous courtyards one that opens up directly from our new Art classroom providing outdoor art opportunities. Our old site did not have a kitchen and the new site has two.  We will be able to separate our students out by grade levels throughout the school’s campus.  The old site had 14 classrooms, very few office spaces, and limited common areas.  The new site has 21 classrooms, an abundance of office space and many beautiful common areas.  The new acreage creates room for future athletic fields, playgrounds, and walking trails.  The new sites gymnasium is larger, offers locker rooms with showers, concession stands, and stage areas for school performances.  The new site has roughly 50,000 square feet of space compared to the old site's 24,000 square foot of space.  The new site boast 24 acres of land where the old site had 14 acres, 6 of which, were in a flood plane. Once you enter the doorways of the new site it is easy to recognize the potential in this amazing property.

Campus Improvements

The campus and buildings where in remarkable condition considering they were underutilized for several years. When MID moved in 2016 we had some roofing work completed on any buildings needing it, replace 20 of the 24 HVAC units, painted, Replaced 16 of the exterior doors, and tore out old carpet and replaced it with new flooring.  We replaced plumbing fixtures, bathroom ceramic tiles, bathroom dividers, and added new light fixtures.  We added new fencing and parking lot gates around the campus and repainted the parking lot.  A new playground was installed in October of 2016 complete with rubber mulch.

MID has 24 acres to grow and to expand in this location and as our schools student body grows in numbers so will our facilities and athletic fields.  We will continue to add all the special touches that has always made MID feel like home.
